Alphabetical Guide to Herbs:

Alfalfa -- natural source of vitamins, minerals, trace minerals.  Used for arthritis, anaemia, healing injuries, pituitary gland, and for balancing electrolytes (salts).

Astragalus for immune boosting, is an adaptogen, also used to treat infection, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Barley Grass -- natural source of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes.  Protects the body from free radical damage and radiation.

Bayberry stops profuse menstruation, helps painful menstrual cramps and tones female organs, including strengthening the uterus during pregnancy.

Bee Pollen contains all known vitamins and essential amino acids, many minerals, trace minerals, enzymes.  Used to increase energy, reduce allergic response in hayfever, improve athletic behaviour.

Bilberry aids eye problems such as failing vision, night vision, computer eyes, glaucoma, cataracts, irritated and tired eyes.

Black Cohosh has an estrogenic effect.  Regulated female cycle, relieves symptoms of menopause.  Stimulates contractions during labour, eases afterbirth pains.  Relaxes muscle cramps and spasms.

Blessed Thistle strengthens liver, purifies blood, helps hormonal imbalances.  Most useful for increasing flow of breast milk in nursing mothers.

Cascara Sagrada is a strong natural laxative, stimulates peristalsis in the colon, stimulates the flow of bile, helps detoxify the liver.

Cayenne in powder and capsules has been prized for thousands of years for its healing power. Many herbalists believe that Cayenne is the most useful and valuable herb in the herb kingdom. It acts as a catalyst and increases the effectiveness of other herbs when used with them. It is a very high source of Vitamins A and C, has the complete B complexes, and is very rich in organic calcium and potassium. It aids elimination and assimilation, and helps the body to create hydrochloric acid, which is so necessary for good digestion and assimilation, especially of proteins. It has traditionally been used for overcoming fatigue and restoring stamina and vigor.

Cold feet? Rub some cayenne pepper on the bottom of each foot and then put on your socks and walk around for a minute or two. The cayenne will enter the 2,000 pores on the bottom of each foot. Do this once a day and in a short time you will have toasty warm feet. Stop when they are warm enough and repeat if they start to get cold again after a few days. Caution be sure to wash your hands carefully always after using cayenne.

Charcoal is used to relieve intestinal gas and diarrhoea, cholesterol reduction and insect bites.

Chickweed helps with weight loss by breaking down fats and suppressing the appetite.  It is also mildly diuretic, and can be used externally for itching.

Cinnamon may lower blood sugar - diabetics beware.  A few studies suggest that adding cinnamon to food-up to a teaspoon a day -- might lower post-meal blood-sugar spikes.  Other studies suggest the effects are limited at best.

Cordyceps strengthens the immune.  Builds strength and endurance.  Chronic cough, coughing of blood, impotence and menopause.

Cranberry is used to treat cystitis and urinary infections.  Tones and strengthens the urinary tract, and prevents bacteria 'sticking' to the tissue lining.

Damiana is an aphrodisiac, may increase sexual drive in women and men.  Helps prostate inflammation.  Blood purifier.  Aids nervous anxiety and depression.

Dandelion is a blood purifier, diuretic.  High in potassium.  Use for anaemia, arthritis, jaundice, water retention, liver problems.

Devils Claw is for stiffness and joint pain, creaking sounds in joints, swollen or deformed joints, and can help hot or burning joints.  Also for liver, kidney and bladder.

Dong Quai acts as a femal tonic, regulates the menses, increases fertility, relieves symptoms of PMS and menopause, builds the blood.  Also used for anaemia and arteriosclerosis.

Echinacea stimulates the immune system, helps body fight and contain infection.  Used for colds, bacterial infections and lowered resistance.

Elderberry for immune boosting.  Relieves symptoms of coughs and colds and is soothing for upper respiratory infections.

Eyebright helps with cataracts, inflamed eyes, tired eyes, can help improve vision.  Also can be used for upper respiratory infections and hayfever, as a blood cleanser and a liver stimulant.

Fennel relieves wind and stimulates appetite.  Lactating mothers can take this for babies' wind.  Good expectorant for coughs.

Fenugreek is excellent for breaking down mucous, especially in the sinuses and bronchial tubes.

Feverfew eases and helps prevent some types of migraine headaches, prevents blood clots and may relieve the inflammation of arthritis.

Ginger is used for digestive disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, intestinal gas.  Used for motion and morning sickness.

Ginkgo is for poor circulation, especially to the hands, feet and brain.  Helps improve memory due to increased circulation in brain.

Ginseng is an adaptogenic herb.  Helps body cope with stress, increases energy, balances blood pressure.  Provides stamina for athletes.

Golden Seal is a natural antibiotic and immune stimulant.  Excellent for clearing infection.  Also improves digestion, cleans liver.

Hawthorn Berries are used to strengthen the heart.  Improves tone, oxygen uptake and circulation of heart muscle.  Dilates blood vessels and normalises high or low blood pressure.

Horsechestnut reduces swelling and pain associated with varicose veins and haemorrhoids.  Strengthens and tones veins, aiding in the prevention of varicose veins.

Horsetail is high in silica, a mineral important to the health and formation of bone, hair, skin and nails.

Hydrangea helps pass kidney and bladder stones.  Prevents the buildup of calcium, relieving calcium stones, bone spurs and calcifications.

Juniper Berries have a strong diuretic action.  Use for water retention, difficulty passing urine, bladder and urinary problems.  Avoid in kidney inflammation.

Kava Kava soothes the nerves amd brings a relaxed state, helping nervousness, anxiety, tension and insomnia.  Also useful for fungal, urinary and bladder infections.

Kelp is high in iodine which stimulates the thyroid gland, prevents goiters and boosts metabolism.  Treats radiation exposure and clears toxicity from heavy metals.  Also high in sodium, potassium and trace minerals.

Licorice Root strengthens adrenals.  Relieves ulcers, intestinal inflammation, dry cough, fatigue, sugar or caffeine cravings.  Helps hypoglycaemia by stabilizing blood-sugar levels.

Marshmallow is a mucilaginous herb that soothes and reduces irritation in digestive system, urinary passages and lungs.  Used for dry cough, irritated bladder, inflamed kidneys and intestinal inflammation.

Milk Thistle is a potent liver tonic - helps clear toxin buildup.  Enhances overall liver function, and stimulates production of new liver cells.

Morinda (Noni) strengthens the immune by increasing white blood cell count.  Anti-bacterial and cellular repair.  Repairs pancreatic cells and joints.

Mullein strengthens lungs in chronic degenerative respiratory diseases.  Use for lung congestion, chest colds, bronchitis, croup.  Rehydrates the lungs.

Nettle increases milk production in nursing mothers.  Rich in iron and Vit C.  Used for vaginal infections and controls menstrual flow.  Also clears congestion from nose and chest, and alleviates hayfever and allergy symptoms.

Olive Leaf Extract opens blocked pancreatic and bile ducts.  Is a viral infection fighter, and helps inhibit candida, yeast and fungal infection.  Excellent for flu's or long illnesses.

Parsley:  University of Missouri scientists found that this herb can actually inhibit breast cancer-cell growth, reported Holly Pevzner in the September/October 2011 issue of EatingWell Magazine. In the study, animals that were given apigenin, a compound abundant in parsley (and in celery), boosted their resistance to developing cancerous tumors. Experts recommend adding a couple pinches of minced fresh parsley to your dishes daily.

Pau d'Arco is for conditions of fungal growth such as athletes foot and candida.  Has antibiotic properties which treat viruses, fever, infections, colds and flu, as well as respiratory and circulatory problems.  Used in arthritis, cancer and AIDS therapy.

Psyllium is a mucilaginous herb which absorb water to bulk and lubricate stool.  Helps constipation and diarrhoea.  Drawing action pulls infection and poisons from body.  Hulls are more effective; Seeds are milder - best for bowel irritation.

Red Clover is a blood and liver purifier.  Strengthens the immune system.  Used for tumors, cancer, arthritis, skin problems eg acne and psoriasis, whooping cough.

Red Raspberry stimulates, tones, regulates the female organs.  Can be used throughout pregnancy to relieve morning sickness and enhance lactation.

Rosemary is often used in marinades for meats and poultry, and there's scientific wisdom behind that tradition: rosmarinic acid and other antioxidant compounds in the herb fight bacteria and prevent meat from spoiling, and may even make cooked meats healthier.

Saffron has long been used in traditional Persian medicine as a mood lifter, usually steeped into a medicinal tea or used to prepare rice.

Sage is an astringent and antiseptic.  Promotes tissue repair and fights infection-causing bacteria.  Used for hot flushes, dyspepsia, sore throat, night sweats.

Saw Palmetto tones the male reproductive, relieving symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and enhancing male sex hormones.

Senna is a strong laxative.

Slippery Elm absorbs toxins fom GI tract and calms and soothes entire digestive system.  A mild laxative.  Useful for diarrhoea, especially in children.  Nutritive food for sick or elderly.

Spirulina is a source of easily digested proteins, vitamins, minerals.  Provides all the essential amino acids.  Clears toxicity and fights fatigue.

St Johns Wort (Hypericum) relieves mild depression and anxiety.  Helps uplift the spirits.  Has antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral properties.  Also has anti-retroviral (HIV) action.

Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory used for arthritic pain and swelling.  Also for liver and gall-bladder conditions, stomach disorders, menstrual problems and blood clots.

Uva Ursi is a strong diuretic used to treat kidney and bladder infections and incontinence.  Disinfects the urinary tract.

Valerian is a popular nerve tonic and sedative.  Helps insomnia, nervous tension and anxiety, and works to regulate the heartbeat.

Wild Yam is a hormone balancer used for menopause, menstrual cramps and rheumatism.  Does not contain progesterone.
