The physical detox that begins almost as soon as you stop taking your drug of choice is the focus of your drug treatment initially.  But once the withdrawal symptoms have passed, even though your body is no longer rebelling at the absence of the drug, it still has the toxic buildup from long-term drug use.  Getting proper nutrition is one important way to help your body flush these toxins out of your system, helping you to feel more energetic, fight off illness and feel healthier.  Coupled with gentle exercise like yoga and walking, lots of water and a healthy meal plan will continue your detox during treatment and after you return home.

During your admission process, you should let your counselors know about your dietary preferences, if you have any allergies or any foods you simply can't stand.  A nutritional assessment should be a part of your intake and you can discuss with your counselor the specifics of your dietary goals.  Dietary options at your drug rehab should include organic produce and well-balanced meals and, as with other aspects of treatment, if your goals change, you need only discuss your new needs and have your dietary plan altered as necessary.

Drug Rehab and Proper Nutrition:  Making Good Choices

Good nutrition choices may begin during drug rehab, but you can carry the new recipes and healthy ways of eating with you when you leave.  Making good choices in recovery is not reserved simply for turning down drugs and alcohol but touches every aspect of life.  In order to make sure that you are in optimum physical health, mentally aware and emotionally stable, good nutrition is a must.  Starting in drug rehab, you can learn good nutrition and eating habits that will serve as another brick in the foundation of your recovery when you return home.

But What About Prescription Drugs and Nutritional Deficiencies?

Perhaps 30% of pharmaceutical side effects are the direct result of these drug-induced nutrient deficiencies.  In other words, a drug "robs" you of one or more nutrients or other helpful substances, and this lack of nutrients causes additional side effects.  In a sense, the drug acts as an "anti-vitamin pill", taking away the substances you need for good health.  Thus, nutrient depletion caused by the drugs -- rather than the drugs themselves -- is often directly responsible for many of the side effects associated with pharmaceuticals.

Among the most common prescription drugs linked to nutrient depletion are oral contraceptives, cholesterol-lowering statins, and antibiotics.  These and many other over-the-counter and prescription medications can interfere with your body's ability to digest, absorb, synthesize, or make use of certain nutrients, leading to nutrient deficiency-related "side effects".

Pharmaceutical Drugs Are Helpful, But . . .

Pharmaceutical drugs perform many miracles every day, from controlling diabetes to containing virulent infections.  However, it is important to remember that all drugs -- every single one of them, even the simple and ubiquitous aspirin -- have side effects, and that some of these side effects can be ameliorated or even eliminated by restoring the missing nutrients.

There is no plan to include Coenzyme Q-10 into the GNLD product line.  Though we have watched Q-10 research closely we have not been comfortable with the sourcing and bioavailability.  All commercial sources available of Q-10 are synthetic and the evidence of bioavailability was lacking.

GNLD's Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) continues to monitor the research on Coenzyme Q-10, but at this time we cannot justify producing a product that would not be certain to provide real health and nutrition benefits, and would not be from natural sourcing.
